AI choices spark students’ intellectual curiosity

- AI in education must not create passive students who lose their natural intellectual curiosity. Poorly designed pedagogy risks making students too comfortable. On the contrary, AI must both challenge and support students to keep their intellectual curiosity alive, says Jesper Mårtensson, CEO and co-founder of Swedish edtech innovator Mathleaks.

- A future where students can no longer calculate or reason independently would be a disaster.

Swedish Mathleaks’ new AI, called MathVizy, is the first in the world to be fully dedicated to mathematics. The system can draw and explain every step in a problem with greater accuracy than all other general AIs. It builds on the company’s current digital math services, used in schools and homes by 2.5 million students and teachers worldwide.

New technology like AI can contribute to more equitable education and relieve teachers of administrative tasks. However, it is crucial to clarify how AI should be used in schools so it does not remain an abstract idea. Teachers can automate many administrative and repetitive tasks such as grading, writing assessments, and managing students’ learning in detail. Teachers can follow each student’s development both inside and outside the classroom, at individual and group levels.

With a digital pen, students can work on paper just as they do today, but everything is automatically uploaded and saved digitally. In this way, AI-based learning materials can talk, correct, and guide students without taking over their learning.

- If students have free access to AI, teachers may lose control over learning. Therefore, teachers should be able to control how AI is used during lessons, practice, or assessments. For example, AI can present solutions directly or require students to create their own answers. Students may also need to explain their reasoning orally or in writing.

Together with a larger group of teachers and researchers in mathematics, Jesper Mårtensson and his company have prepared the launch this winter. He believes that current learning materials are ready to be replaced to better suit both students and teachers, and everyone can start from where they are, regardless of knowledge level.
